How Google Earth Can Help Your Business

Using Google Earth to help your local business ranking is great. The process is fairly simple and in the end you get a great new mapping software, Google Earth!

Here are some key steps to help you add your business to Google Earth:

1. Download Google Earth.
First and foremost, you’ll need the tools. Download Google Earth and install the software.

2. Using Google Earth to Create a KML File
KML stands for ‘Keyhole Markup Language’, an XML based language that will allow Google to further validate your company’s physical address.

To begin creating a ‘placemark’ in Google Earth, simply watch this video:

After you’ve generated your Placemark, simply ‘save as’ a KML file and put the file in the root directory of your website.

3. Creating a Geo-Sitemap
Simply copy/paste the geo-sitemap format from Google, using your website and kml file location, and paste it into an XML file. Once you’ve replaced all of the example information with the location of your website and KML file, save the XML file as ‘geo-sitemap.xml’ and load them into the root directory of your website.

Now that you have the KML and XML file in the root directory of your website, activate your ftp program and publish them to the root directory on your web server.

4. Google Webmaster Tools
Once the kml and xml files are safely published to your webserver, login to Google Webmaster Tools and add the XML file as an additional sitemap to your website.

Adding the Geo-Sitemap to your webmaster tools account and submitting the KML file url to Google will help index your KML file faster than if spiders were to look for it.

5. Conclusion
In the end, having a Geo-Sitemap will help further validate your company’s physical address and help Google index (or categorize) your business more efficiently.
